Gender justice

To ensure improved access to safe, timely, effective, and appropriate preventive and responsive services for children and women to address all forms of violence, exploitation, abuse, and neglect. Also, to raise awareness on gender equality, gender-based violence (GBV), and sexual and reproductive health, and to ensure the integration of protection in humanitarian and development responses)

Female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C)

Somaliland has one of the highest rates of FGM/C in the world, with an estimated 98% of women and girls aged 15-49 having undergone FGM/C (UNICEF, 2020). Therefore, there a different type of FGM/C practices such as:

  • Type I (clitoridectomy): removal of the clitoris.
  • Type II (excision): removal of the clitoris and labia minora.
  • Type III (infibulation): removal of the clitoris, labia minora, and labia majora, and narrowing of the vaginal opening.
  • Type IV: other forms of FGM/C, including pricking, piercing, or incising.

All these above types have the following consequences:

  • Physical: chronic pain, infections, infertility, complications during childbirth.
  • Psychological: anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Social: stigma, social isolation, limited economic and educational opportunities

Drivers

  • Cultural and social norms.
  • Misconceptions about FGM/C as a religious requirement.
  • Fear of social exclusion and stigma.
  • Limited access to education and information.

Way Forward

  • Continue to raise awareness and challenge social norms
  • Strengthen policy and legal frameworks
  • Increase access to education and information
  • Support community-led initiatives
  • Address the physical and psychological consequences of FGM/C through healthcare and support services.
