Community Development

Vision: Our long-term vision for the community is holistic development, aiming to bring about sustainable change for individuals and communities.

In our context, community development is a way to challenge inequalities by supporting communities to make the changes important to them.

We believe community development should be inclusive and open to everyone by supporting local communities to utilise their assets to enhance community life and facilitate collaboration between communities and public bodies to improve the delivery of services and decision-making processes.

Areas of focus

Health and well-being

Warsan’s health interventions are primarily aimed at strengthening health systems and preventative healthcare services. There is limited access to healthcare services for low-income communities and individuals, such as:-

  1. Inadequate medical facilities and equipment in existing healthcare centres
  2. High morbidity and mortality rates due to preventable diseases
  3. Inequitable distribution of healthcare resources and services in Somaliland and other parts of the Horn of Africa.

Our organisation has been operating a mobile clinic, providing essential healthcare services to marginalised communities in  Somaliland for the last seven years.

The primary objectives of health and well-being are three main activities, such as:-

  • Mobile Clinic Operations.
  • Health Education and Awareness.
  • Partnerships and Networking.

Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) improvement

Progress on water-related challenges, as framed in the Sustainable Development Goal  (SDG 6) on clean water and sanitation, will be an integral part of delivering on the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

Water is indeed inseparably linked to various sectors of human society, serving as a common basis that runs through almost all sustainable development goals. To cite only a few examples, Clean water and sanitation are a basic requirement for human health, and access to water is a requirement for poverty alleviation. Water is also a vital input to agricultural production, a major source of livelihood in the region, while Somaliland faces serious water-related challenges.

Inclusive education (functional literacy)

Our organisation focuses on promoting functional literacy and adult education, and our goal is to create a literate and educated community, equipped to drive positive change and sustainable development through:-

  • Enhancing access to quality education for marginalised communities.
  • Fostering a culture of lifelong learning.
  • Developing skills for economic empowerment and environmental sustainability.
  • Promoting gender equality and social inclusion

Capacity building and strengthening for communities

Empowering community members to take ownership of their development through training, education, and resource provision. WRO often collaborate with local governments, communities, and other stakeholders to drive positive change and sustainable development.

By following this framework, WRO can effectively build capacity in communities, ensuring sustainable development and impact:-

  • Facilitate capacity-building processes, providing guidance and support.
  • Empower communities to take ownership and lead their development.
  • Provide resources, expertise, and networks to complement community efforts.
  • Regularly assess progress, impact, and adjust capacity-building strategies

Sustainable livelihoods and resilience enhancement

Enhance economic empowerment, food security and sustainable agriculture practices.  This activity will also support disaster risk reduction (DRR) is an integral part of social and economic development, and is essential if development is to be sustainable for the future.
